When God Hands You a Dream, Don’t Ask for Instructions

When God Hands You a Dream, Don’t Ask for Instructions. Inspired by The Dream Giver by Bruce Wilkinson, a reflection on trusting divine direction even when the path makes no sense.
A Dream That Arrives Without Directions

Sometimes a dream lands in your heart so clearly it almost startles you. It feels too big and too sacred to be from you. It comes without a manual. There is no checklist. No how to guide. And yet, you feel like you already said yes before you even had the words.

That is how God works. He places a dream in your heart not with full directions but with full conviction.

Leaving the Safety of Familiar

In The Dream Giver, Bruce Wilkinson tells the story of a man named Ordinary who receives a Big Dream. He lives in a place called Familiar where everything is safe and predictable. But once his dream arrives, the comfort begins to feel heavy.

And when he decides to pursue what God placed inside him, the people around him resist. They urge him to stay where it’s safe. They don’t understand. This moment feels deeply real. Because stepping into a God given calling often means stepping out of what others expect from you.

Obedience Doesn’t Always Make Sense

Following God’s nudge does not come with applause. In fact, it can look reckless to the outside world. People may not get why you left a job that made sense or why you’re pouring time into something you cannot fully explain yet.

But God didn’t ask you to explain. He asked you to move. When the vision comes from Him, clarity follows obedience, not the other way around.

Resistance Is a Sign You’re Moving

One of the deepest truths in the book is this: resistance does not mean you are lost. It often means you’re heading in the right direction. As soon as you take the first step toward the dream, fear and doubt show up.

But they are not always warnings. Sometimes they are proof that you are walking into something that matters. When the enemy cannot steal your dream, he will try to shake your confidence.

The Dream Will Stretch and Shape You

This part is tender. Because the dream will not just change your schedule. It will change you. As you walk toward what God gave you, He will grow your patience, soften your heart and deepen your trust. You will become the person who can carry the assignment.

Not overnight. But over time. The journey is not about perfection. It’s about surrender.

You Don’t Need the Whole Map to Begin

There will come a moment where it all feels too big. Too unclear. Too far. That is not the end. That is the beginning.

Because when you run out of your own strength, you finally have space to rely on God’s. If there is a dream on your heart that you didn’t ask for but cannot ignore, maybe the next step is not figuring it out.

Maybe the next step is simply trusting that it was placed there for a reason.

Say yes to the first step. That’s often all He’s waiting for.
